Habits that kill productivity

If you don’t feel like you have enough time in the day, it may be because you are using your time unwisely—not because you have an unrealistic workload. Break the following habits and you’ll become much more productive.

Turning to the Web too often.

Don’t hop online to find the answer the second a question pops into your head even if it is work-related. If you do, you’ll become distracted and spend more time than you planned surfing various sites. Unless you can’t continue working without an answer, write down all your questions, and spend a block of time later in the day answering them all.

Rewarding yourself for little progress.

If you put in several hours of hard, tedious work, you deserve a break. If you hit a major benchmark in a project, you should treat yourself. If, however, you reward yourself, even when you don’t accomplish anything, you are simply stalling or wasting time.

Pushing off important work until “later.”

Your will power and energy diminish as the day goes on. If you opt to focus on small or easy tasks early so that you feel productive, you risk having to rush through your most important work, and you may not finish it at all. Tackle the critical stuff first.

Under- or over-planning your day.

You need a basic plan for completing your work. You don’t, however, want to schedule every minute of your day, because unexpected issues crop up. Start with a prioritized to-do list, but plan for only five hours of work each day to allow wiggle room in your schedule.
